Payroll usually encompasses all the rules and regulations of properly paying employees. It can include working with time cards (paper or electronic) tax calculations, 401K and insurance deductions, etc.
Accounting can cover a variety of things, but usually amounts to keep the records in balance for some company. I view accounting as boring and mundane. Payroll is a little more fun.
I took accounting classes and found them to be a waste of time. I am not cut out to be an accountant. Payroll regulations are something that you can learn as you go if you have some familiarity with how tax and withholding regulations work.

Accounting is a general term. You can do accounts payables (cutting checks) or Accounts receivables (sending invoices). Payroll is just a seperate program. It's an optional part of accounting, not everyone does it.
You can take a one day class at an adult school for it usually.
Most places would like you to have a degree in accounting in order to get paid the big bucks but you can go through a certificate program or get your AA at a local community college to start. If your lucky, someone will train you on the job.

Payroll is a part of accounting. You should study accounting because you will be able to do more. You won't be so limited.
You can specialize later if you want to.
You should strive for a Bachelor's degree and consider taking the CPA exam. If that is too much for you then you can work your way up. You won't really need much education to begin. It's not that difficult.

payroll is just one aspect of accounting, to do with calculating salaries, deductions etc.
Accounting is a general subject dealing with maintaining and auditing records and preparing financial reports for a business. To become an accountant you need a college degree in that subject area.
