Tell him not to take defeat as a permanent thing. In any given conflict there is a winner and a looser. It is what you learn from your defeat that makes you better. You know if you don't lose a match once in while there is little opportunity to learn. I lost a lot of matches before I won any. Some of those guys I later defeated some quit easy.
Tell him never give up. Ask if he would help you to train and practice together you will both become better I promise I have seen it over and over.

If hes not a grand master, then there is always room to LEARN. Tell him to go back, figure out HOW he got beat, and try to improve on it. If thats the case, then this "loss" is anything but; it has become a learning experience.

I can understand he may be embarrassed by the loss, but trying to improve in Martial Arts with an ego is a very difficult thing to do.

Just my two cents.

This is a valuable lesson for both of you, it sounds like it will make or break you friend, suggest you do the most difficult thing of all - 'do nothing for quite some time'. Know you want to get in there and sort it for him (I assume) but you cant make a plant grow by tugging at the roots, hope that helps

He's still got an ego attachment to his fighting. He'll never be any good while he holds onto that.

I can't tell if you're a martial artist of any kind or not, but you don't have the proper mindset for it, either.

If either of you had a real martial artist "fighting spirit", that fighting match you speak of would never have occurred to either of you.

He just learned a very painful and valuable lesson, he needs more practice, if he's not good at kumite, he NEEDS to practice more, specially being a brown belt.

If he doesn't mind watching anime get him to watch the show Hajime No Ippo. This show is great and always boosts my fighting spirit making me push myself as hard as I can.
