I would like to advise you that at this time our wedding has been canceled or postponed. Thank you so much for the terrific gift that you have given us but JOHN and I feel It would be in appropriate to keep the gift and we would like for you to accept it back. We thank you for the best wishes and your generosity. We respectfully appreciate it.

Thank you for your generosity in giving us this ________. Unfortunately at this time Joe and I feel that it would not be in our best interest to move foward with our wedding plans and it has been canceled. Please accept your gift back along with our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Love,
Marie

****Note if the gift was something unreturnable like a engraved picture frame (barf but that's a diff matter) you should try to include a check for what you think the gift probably cost and change it to be something like

Thank you for the engraved picture frame. Enclosed is a check for X dollars which Joe and I hope will compensate for what you spent on our gift since the wedding has been called off...

just a kind consideration for their gifts. Its not their fault the wedding was called off so you don't owe them anything more than a thank you and to return the gifts.

The card should say something about how much you appreciate the kindness and generosity and that you loved the gift, but in light of the situation, must return it with warm thanks.
