With live crabs you know they're fresh.
With dead crabs, you don't know how long they've been dead and shellfish rot very quickly.
The frozen crab are pre-cooked at the plant.

The ones in the store are cooked, THEN frozen. Dead crabs will start to rot immediately.

Boiling them alive prevent them from releasing a poison in their meat. And the ones in the store are boiled then frozen, just like frozen vegetables.

Unfortunately, it's necessary in order to have the meat taste the way we all expect.
The best way to keep them from suffering is to put them in the freezer first. It slows down their metabolism so much that they're dead before they realize you just dropped them in boiling water.
