20 Wherefore, the word of the Lord was fulfilled which he spake unto me, saying that: Inasmuch as they will not hearken unto thy words they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And behold, they were cut off from his presence.
21 And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.
22 And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities.
23 And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.
24 And because of their cursing which was upon them they did become an idle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey.
25 And the Lord God said unto me: They shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in remembrance of me; and inasmuch as they will not remember me, and hearken unto my words, they shall scourge them even unto destruction.
Of course it's verse 21 that most people reference, and within that verse many people who don't understand the verse point to the skin of blackness and say that is the curse. But it's not. The cause of the curse was that their hearts had become hard like a flint. And because of that, the curse was that they could not comprehend the true Gospel. See my third source (2 Ne 30:6) where it says that their scales of darkness fell from their eyes, meaning that they were able to understand the true Gospel again.
There is a difference between the "mark" and the "curse". I hope I've given my understanding of the curse. Now on to the "mark" which is your question.
The mark was given to them to make them undesirable to the Nephites. My last source is a reference which was surprising to me when I searched for "mark". The one that really struck me was the "wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth." The law being marriage. And if the wife (as was the custom of the time) had to do what the husband said, and he did not follow the Gospel then she couldn't raise her children in the Gospel which meant that the kids wouldn't really have a chance to follow the Lord and the Gospel would be lost to the Nephites - IF they intermarried with the Lamanites.
I don't know, it makes sense to me, but it may loose meaning over the Internet.

In the Book of Mormon, it is explained to have been given to them from being attractive to the Nephites. For if they were to intermingle with the Laminites the Gospel of Christ would be lost. They were also given a blessing a little later where they as a family would not be destroyed. The Nephites were given a curse and and if they chose to forget and become wicked as there brothers the Laminites they would be destroyed. There for no true Nephites survived into the present time as all were destroyed.

The correct spelling would be "Lamanites" named after a man named Laman.
They were unrighteous and sought to thwart the plan of God and fulfill all unrighteousness. Over time, by the way of life choices and unholy behavior, they lost the "light" of Christ and became wicked.
The same can happen to us. If we leave the truth and the light of God, we distance ourselves from Him and slowly become darkened to the truth.

They rebelled against God and tried to kill their brethren. And they received the dark skin so that they would be separated and distinguishable from their brothers posterity.
