When you capitalize the word Apartment you're using the word as if it's the proper name for where you live and it's not used in the sentence that way. The name of your apartment is probably something like "Pheasant Drive Apartments" or "Green Street Apartments" or "The Apartments", not "an Apartment". The second sentence would be grammarically correct unless you decapitialize the word apartment in the first.

an apartment could be the only living quarter for rent in a house or building. An apartment building of course has more than one apartment located there.

Both descriptions would be connected to another unit by a common wall. Apartment Building is bigger or has more units, such as 25-and up to 200 plus. I would think that apartment would mean (if actually not the same) just a smaller amount of apartments (such as 3-10 to 25) Also condo's, condominiums, are one in the same.
