racer 51, in case you don't read the papers or watch the news...it's still OK for parents to smack unrully children..the woolly liberals were trying to ban it.

A smack does NOT send out mixed messages...it tells the child clearly that if he(or she) does that then they will get a smack. If they don't, they won't.
Smacking too often is counter productive...often it's the threat that it COULD happen that keeps a child in check.

Thank goodness!! I got a few smacks when I wiz wee and haven't needed councelling or a visit frae a social worker. I think that one of the main problems with today's kids are that they have no respect, perhaps if they had been given a wee smack, they would think twice about taunting old biddies, chucking bricks through windows, thieving for a laugh, etc. etc. I still don't swear in front of my mum and dad, I'm forty four now.

BAD!
Where are the children's rights?
If parents can't find a mature, yet effective way of disciplining their children without raising a hand to them, they can only expect violent, or angry children.
I grew up in a care home, and loads of kids came and went because of violence at home, which had started at smacking and got way out of hand.
We need to start helping the next generation how to get around these violent situations they might have in life, smacking them will just contradict that message.

The occasional `sensible` smack is ok...the real problem is you cannot trust everyone - even parents. The odd `kinky` adult or parent might actually begin to enjoy doing it (oh yeh, unhealthy I know, but it happens) ... a `control-freak` sort of thing.
.........................
Many kids today have never known `fear` or even severe discomfort - and are pretty sure in today`s soft society, they never will, because of this PC control. Thus they have no respect for any adult, cos they think that whatever they say or do, no one can do anything about it.
...........................
The odd sharp smack just makes them think. A sensible respect of fear and pain is natural to all animals ...and is learnt anyway in nature - many young animals are `disciplined` by their parents - it`s a way of learning. Only us silly human animals say `no, no. NEVER no smacking!"

Good' because its obvious its not working trying to talk to 6yrs old and young teenagers, society has collapsed and there is no respect in family's anymore
You will get the anti no smacking brigade shouting but' they do not live in the ghettos of city's where crime is rife and old people are murdered

Good! Wonderful! Bendigedig! We can all now stop having nightmares about going to prison for smacking our children and grandchildren when they deserve it. That wise man Solomon (Prov. xiii. 24) says: “He that spareth the rod hateth his son.” Well, I don't really approve of the rod, but I certainly loved - and occasionally smacked - my sons. And they are not in the least disturbed as a result -- in fact, they are thoroughly civilised.

It's hard to say... pp are getting whacky nowadays. And wis it because they had too much smacking when they were little or otherwise?
I have brothers who went into drugs (too long ago - they are free now) but I didn't and it had nothing to do really with how hard my dad would hit me, but how bad disappointed with me he would get and how I admired him to let this happen. "I'd rather not!"
That's what kids should be taught!
