Did you want a book-length answer? Because that's what would be required :-)

I once read a cute funny "test", on which one of the questions was "Briefly describe the universe in detail."

I think this is rather obvious why it's better to go to heaven then to go to hell - it's better? ;-}

From what I know to be true, it's not about the benefits of going to "heaven." You can't NOT go to "heaven." I don't consider it "heaven" in the terms that most people do. For me, where we go when we die is our real home. We return there after an incarnation in order to review the life we've just led, to learn and grow as a spirit/soul/whatever you want to call it. I also believe that we decide what our next life will entail, what body we will have, where we will live (which planet, which socitey, which family), what type of life we will lead, and the challanges we will face. I believe that we decide who we want to incarnate with, and we decide on roles that will benefit both of the beings in the relationship. We tend to incarnate with the same souls, every time playing different roles.
I suppose the payoff is to learn and grow. It's my belief that the purpose of life is experience, and we all desire to experience all that life could possibly offer. We do this by incarnating many, many times. Eventually, a soul may choose to stop incarnating and become a teacher to those who still do.

I'm a Hindu. There is no "heaven"... The payoff is realization of the Supreme Being and attaining Moska.

In my former (Catholic) system, I'm not sure what the official idea is, but this is what I gleaned from it: Eternal happiness and perfection.

I rather suspect I somewhat missed the point - I viewed it as being all about me being perfectly happy. I think you're also supposed to be thrilled beyond measure that you get to meet God.

LOL - I was never a good little Catholic.

I once asked an ex-Buddhist monk how it feels like to be in deep meditation. He said it's like a full hour of non-stop ejaculation. Many people are willing to go to jail just for a moment of this worldly joy. Perhaps, in Heaven, it would be an eternity of a much more blissful experience, something you could leave the whole world for.

I'll wager it was the "payoff"...lol.

Also, nice Dumbledore reference.

Oh, but I'm an atheist. In my non-belief system, there is no heaven and no "payoff" for avoiding pleasure at all costs while here on earth.

Well, according to what I believe and read in the Bible, and some things I just , well sorta take for granted, I guess you would say, is. I will be with my creator FOREVER.
I will be able to finally meet the Great Almighty, God, the King, to not only KNOW his love but to be surrounded , encased, enveloped in it, soaked in it, LIVE in it....... I will be able to walk the streets of pure , simple, beautiful perfection.... I will be able to Praise Him at all times, without anyone saying STOP THAT, or that is just NOT FAIR, etc......... There will be babies and children playing all over, playing with NO fear of evil...... I and all others will be in perfect health, able to do what ever we need to do in that economy of life....... No pain, no tears, nothing but perfection in EVERY sense of the word and life....... Hmmmm, sure sounds wonderful to me !!!!! go in peace....... God bless
