I went on the NRA's website and it says you need a permit to carry a handgun. If I buy a handgun at a store and carry it out in the case, do I need a permit?

Why would you need to go out of state to get a handgun?
If you can't buy one in Jersey then maybe you can't own one there either without a permit. Check with your local law enforcement.

What you are thinking about is a "concealed carry" permit. which would make it legal to carry a handgun or weapon "concealed" from normal view. For self defense purposes.
Your question is not logical though.....it is like saying .....
Well the mall says that i cant have a dog inside of it, but if i buy this puppy inside the mall, how will i get it home?

Unless you have a Dealer's license from the BATFE, you can't buy a handgun out of state. Rifles are a little different depending on individual state law, but the handgun idea just isn't legal.

The flaw here is not with the permit, but the state. If your residence is in one state you cannot buy a handgun in another state.

No you don't need a permit immediately after buying it to transport it home, however you can not have it loaded while transporting it to your home, thereafter you may purchase whatever permit for whatever purpose you want once you get it home.*

Purchase it and have it sent to a local FFL dealer for you to pick it up... i believe it is illegal to cross state borders, but I am not sure.
