Plastic. You don't have to be flashy or expensive. I have a daughter so I got a regular BIG purple plastic bin for her toys and she loves it. I got it from Walmart.

Got mine at Toys R Us, I think the brand is First Steps. It is plastic. The lid opens up and slides back so that you don't have to hold it up. Above the box part there is a couple of shelves that work great for books or other toys that are played with more often. It came in two different colors, Pink and White, and Gray and Red. I didn't care for the wooden ones because the hinges looked like it would be easy to pinch fingers.

Honestly, we currently use a huge cardboard box for our daughter's toys. She's at that age where she likes to scribble on EVERYTHING and we dont have to worry about her scribbling on the cardboard because its easily disposable. But her daddys making a wooden toybox for her and is nearly finished so the cardboard will be gone soon.
I did see a really nice plastic toybox at Toys R Us though. It was a Little Tikes box. It was nice but very expensive and way too small to hold all the toys a kid gets.

I like the wooden ones. They seem to be sturdier and smell great! I bought a TRUE wooden toy chest from a craft fair for my daughter. She loves it.
Plastics easier though. My son has so many "toy sets" (like Geo-Trax, Spiderman toys, etc) that most are divided up into those big plastic totes. He even has one with 3 drawers in it so that he can keep all his littler toys together. It doubles as a bedside table. And the plastic totes stack easily in his closet.
Just pick the one that works best for your child and your household.

For wood, you will want to get it from a furniture store, because they will sand it down and they will put veneer over it as a coating to make it smooth. I just earlier this year we finally threw out my old wood toybox, ive had it for 20 years. It never gave me a splinter.
Plastic can be weak and if they climb on it, can become a hazard. If you wanna to plastic do Sterilite Plastic rolling boxes with an easy lid that comes all the way off.

Never like the plastic ones, because when they get old and they start to crack, causing a hazard. Kids want to climb and jump on it. Wood is better, just don't get the kind made out of press wood, because has a formagihide clue (chemicals) that outgasses for the kids to breath. If you see any wood toy boxes, please turn it over to besure the wood is not a verneer that is covering the press wood.

I don't have a baby myself but I nanny for children from 4 months to 2 years old. I've found that the happiest babies have space to move around. For example, set off a room or corner of the living room with colorful mats when they start crawling. Of course put a variety of toys around the edges of the mat so they can move to each toy. The baby will try to leave the mat so a "fence" or gate around the mat is useful too. You can find them in babies r us. Also, get your child started on story time early. Read books, It's a good distraction in the later months during teething or separation anxiety but if they're not accustom to it they won't take to it as easily. A dry erase marker board is very handy. Put it on the fridge and record when and how much the baby has ate and what time they've pooped. It's good to be organized. ( also keep lots of cleaning supplies, wipes, and hand sanitizer around the house. ) Things like wipe warmers, bottle warmers, and a music player for bed time are nice but not necessary. Lastly, one of my favorite gadgets is the baby monitor that has a screen and records the baby when they're sleeping. So you could be down stairs and look at the screen of your baby monitor and see how your baby is doing! congrats on your first baby!!

Plastic toys but make sure to check the lead, wooden toys could leave splinters and be very harmful.
