I just got done buying a 2007 Hyundai for my wife. Trade in value was the second to last thing I discussed with them. What you need to do is go to sites like edmunds.com find the tmv (True Market Value Price of the car. Negotiate from there. Now on the trade in you can go to kbb.org one thing I found out is they have this little black book and they are going to try and just give you the "Fair Market Value" of your trade in. What I did was take the Fair Market Value and the Good Market Value took the difference and divided that in 1/2. This was my trade in price. And I wound up being very close to it, in fact they gave me about 200 hundred more. What this guy is doing is screwing you over. Leave, in fact screw even going back. This guy is a schister. Any more info that you need please feel free to e-mail me about it. I feel I really did a good job getting the car I needed for the right price. Good Luck.

Just remember you hold the upper hand. Not the dealer.
In this market they'll bend over backwards for a sale, if you don't get what you want - WALK!

If your credit is good to excellent. Get pre-qualified. You'll have more leverage for negotiating.

Go to edmunds.com and price out the Durango with the options you want. Print and take with you for reference. When you negotiate the price. Start with the dealer invoice price, not the Sticker price.

Find out what incentives are out there. Low financing, Cash Back, Free Maintenance, etc. Be prepared, and don't make the sale on the first meeting. Take everything in writing, and don't put a deposit. (Even if they pressure you with a good "sounding" deal)

Dealers are overstocked with cars.... so you'll get one, and if you get one for a great deal. Its worth the time and effort.

Just go to another dealership, tell the sales thanks for your time but if you can't help me I will go elsewhere and then leave. You might find a better deal.

Here a thought.
My husband bought a 2004 Durango and he is always trying to drive my car because they are horrible with gas. So maybe you can do some research on the internet about the different vechicles and dealerships and be ready for the next dealership. Time is precious so don't waste it one one sales idiot.

first, why would you even consider a durango...they are terrible. Much better SUV's out there for the price, do some research. Next, why would you even deal with this salesman? He works for you, just walk and go to another dealship, or go to the sales manager. Another option would be to negotiate the deal online carsdirect.com etc. No deal hassels that way.

Walk.

"Well, thank you for your time, Mr. Salesman, but we've pretty much decided on buying that other one and we really need to get $$$ for our trade in. Since you can't or won't do that, we'll just be on our way and find someone else to deal with."

A great strategy, but you really have to be ready to walk out, get in your car and drive to another dealer. Usually they will stop you and do the deal right. Keep your head, and check ALL the numbers, though. Guys like that will try to slip something in on you just for spite.
