What if I just can't believe in it all?

Time and again on this site I've heard Christians say that it's our choice as to whether we go to Heaven or Hell. But to go to Heaven I have to believe that Jesus is my Lord and Saviour. I can't believe this because, try as I might, I can't find an iota of evidence for it. If I just say I accept Jesus without believing it, will I get to Heaven or am I destined to spend in eternity in Hell?

Some people are making the assumption that I wish I could believe.

I don't. As I don't believe Hell exists, I'm not in the least bothered that other people believe that I'm going there.

On rereading this, I think I see where you went wrong.

"Try as I might" makes it sound as though you WANT to. This is what's leading people to give advice about either giving up the struggle, or for how to acquire faith.

Unless I'm mistaking your intention, which is to ask how it's possible for one to decide to believe what one doesn't, in fact, believe.

You might want to remove this question, and try again.

What I take to be your actual question interests me, as I've had the same puzzlement with the "choice" language believers use.

That's why I've taken to asking them how they would go about believing that a purple and green unicorn created the universe and it will punish them if they don't believe it.

Mollymac,

I come from a system of belief that is not Christian. Although, I do believe that Jesus is an Ascended Master and the son of God, I also believe that others have reached that level of consciousness, Buddha for example, and that we all are the sons and daughters of Great Spirit. Given that, I think that you should explore the realms of spirituality and find what is truly right for you. And if the Christians are right that you cannot get into heaven without knowing Christ, then I think he will be there to greet you with open arms and a loving smile. There is something out there greater than ourselves and the only hell that exists is the one that we create for ourselves with our own thoughts.

Love, Joy, and Peace

If a person wants to believe in going to a literal heaven or hell... by saying I believe Jesus is my Lord , well that is not a guarenteed deal. Pastors, priests, any religious leader haven't the power or authority to decide any persons ultimate fate. Going to a literal heaven or hell is a lure to keep Christians on the straight and narrow path...hell? that's a scare tactic. There is only One that has the power and authority to decide every perons ultimate destiny.

Good question and I feared much of what you said for some time. You just have to learn to release yourself from these things. It appears that the exposure you've had to religion has been based on fear, doubt, anxiety and maladjustment.

It took me 7 years before I released myself from the burden of Christianity. It was one of the most painful things I ever did. But when I did, it was so liberating and peaceful afterward that I still feel that peace to this day.

And anyway, if you think god knows all and sees all, he has already determined whether or not you are going to hell, no matter what you do. Isn't that the kind of god you don't want to have any part with, or believe in?

You will go to Hell without beliving in Jesus, Now with that in mind remember that At one point it just takes faith. some things are not crystal clear and some things can not be explained.
It is more of where your mind is at on the subject. I would suggest talking with someone whom you know who is a beliver in Jesus and Just aske anything you can and that would be a great start.
You may be destined to spend eternity in Hell but I sure would hope not.

But I will pray for you to get an answer.

If you don't believe then there's no Heaven or Hell for you to worry about.

For those of us that do believe, then we hope one day to enter into God's eternal grace and go to Heaven.

My dear. You have answered your own question. You have to believe. Since I completely understand how it is not to be able to believe, I empathize with you. Never fear though, just listen to your inner voice. I call it my intuition, my husband calls it his heart. The answers will come as you seek them, not in your timeframe of expectation, but when needed. The answers you seek will find you.

You just need to be a good person and follow the teachings of God and you will get in.

Jesus was the final blood sacrifice and should not be worshiped but accepted as the sacrifice. His blood hides your sins from God.

Believing is a choice. Faith is a gift of God. People believe what they want to believe whether it be true or not.All of us no doubt believe a lot of things which are not true.
