ok he has lots of expierince shooting targets.not deer or bear.those calibers he listed arent in fact the best.may be best for you but not for him.a .22 could kill a deer or bear instantly.he has decided on a 45-70 for hunting.thanks to all.

I would go with 7 mm or 7 mm/08. They are both very flat shooting, accurate, and have adequate power. If he really wants to go for bear I would strongly lean to the 7 mm.
For the rifle, a Remington Model 700 would fill the need very nicely.
Good Luck!
Also, if he is recoil shy then he might want a semi-auto. That would cut down recoil. Or just use Remington's Managed-Recoil rounds.

What he doesnt want it what he needs. Anything under a 30-06 will just make a bear angry and anything over a 30-06 for deer will leave more hole than meat. you just about need two different rifles because the caliber requirements are way different. A .243 will kill a deer fine, but like i said, it not gonna do much to a bear.

The 7mm Mag is a good round, but much more recoil than the .243. The 7mm08 is a good round, but it is difficult to find ammo and there are not a lot of choices for it. If you reload, have him get a 7mm08 and pay for the reloading dies. A reloader can tweak this round to fit almost anyones needs. There are a lot of 7mm bullets available. For Bear, go with something designed to hold together and penetrate deeply. Some examples are Barnes X, Winchester Fail Safe, Swift A Frame, and Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. There are several others which I forgot, but you can get the idea. Get 2 or 3 reloading manuals, Hodgdon has theirs on the internet, and compare loadings to find something which looks like what you want and have your friend shoot it until he is comfortable with the recoil and accuracy.

Sorry, but at 5'10 and 325 lbs he probably should not be walking around out in the woods. He needs to get into better shape before he attempts to do deer or bear hunting. Dragging a deer or bear out of the woods is no easy task.

I am 6'-1", 360 pounds and I am good in powerlifting. For all North American hunting I may use a .300 winchester magnum. It has a gret trajectory and has been used in 1000 yard contests. For elephants, I have a .460 weatherby magnum, but one does not need such a gun for deer and bear.

Sorry to say, but the calibers you've listed that he DOESN'T want are the very best ones that fit the description of what he does what. And if this is his FIRST time hunting, how on earth does he have any educated opinion about what he wants?

Go with a 6.5x55 its reputation is it shoots like a 243 and hits like a 30.06. It is also called the Swedish Mauser. They hunt moose with it in Scandinavian countries.
