The only legit taxes are the state and city sales taxes. All the rest are BS pass-alongs of fees levied against the phone company. About the same as directly passing along part of their electric and sewer costs, which I wouldn't be surprised if they started doing.

The first set of fees are not taxes at all. They go right into the phone company's pocket.

The Federal Universal Service fee is extra profit the Feds allow to make sure the phone company serves all areas, not just the profitable high population areas. I don't know exactly what the City Utility Surcharge and the Cost Recover are but they're something similar.

Cable companies are bad about having a bunch of little fees and surcharges that really add up. The names are selected to make you THINK these are all government required charges that actually go to the government. They are sneakly ways of getting rate increases.

I have Verizon and only pay about 5 dollars a month for their taxes and other charges. Every time I check out a plan I make them tell me how much the other monthly charges are.

Isn't socialism great!

You need to call the company directly and explain your story (be honest). If the first person doesn't help, ask for a supervisor. Be very courteous and they are more likely to help you out. Play the victim, but don't be harsh with the blame game. If that doesn't work, calmly tell them that you will be taking your business elsewhere (even if you don't intend to). Sometimes that will get them to do things to keep you around.
