I stick with zip for file compression for a couple reasons:
1. It's the most proven one out there... it's been around forever
2. It's built into windows these days so there is no cost and you don't even have to download anything to use it. You just highlight the files you want to compress and right-click on them and select WinZip. It doesn't get any easier than that!
The problem with a lot of the other alternatives is then if you send the compressed file to someone they may not have the program to open it and it's a pain in the butt all the way around.
Hope this helps!

Winrar has a lot of advantages over zip .Rar files are smaller than zip files of the same item, and have the fantastic advantage of being able to be opened when incomplete. You cannot do this to a zip file. Also the Parity programs like newzbin (free- look it up!) can repair damaged .rar files downloaded from newsgroups etc. by utilising PAR2 files.

Winrar will also create and open other types of file like .zip and has a built in file repair facility. It also lets you view the contents of a compressed file before you open it so you check what you are actually getting. You can also select individual items from the contents of the file and open them without opening the other items.

Anything using LZMA has the best compression but the trade off is the memory footprint. A great free (opensource) program is called 7zip.

On UNIX, I tend to go with tar & gzip. On MS Windows systems, I'll use either WinZip at work or MS compression or WinRAR at home. The results are close enough for me to use all of them.
tar - native command on UNIX
gzip - http://directory.fsf.org/project/gzip/
WinZip - http://www.winzip.com/ (not free, but cheap enough for most users)
Compression - native to newer Microsoft OS's
WinRAR - http://www.rarlab.com/ (not free, but a trial version available)
