We will have one group shot with 7 people. I would like to separate my sister, her husband, and her 12 yr old boy & 8 yr old girl from me, my husband and 6 yr old boy, but still look coordinated. Any ideas? My dad will be hanging it above his mantel all year long, so I'm trying to avoid Christmas themes!!!

You will be separated in how the families are posed so it would be nice if you could coordinate colors. Make sure that no one is too casual or too dressed up. My family did this as business casual. The picture was taken on a family vacation at the beach and everyone wore light blue shirts of some sort and tan bottoms. It was awesome against the white sand.

business casual is the way to go. have some one family where all the same color top and bottom and the other family maybe wear a different color system. i saw this with like 6 familys in a picture on the wall of a car dealership (i take my car there every few months for a oil change) and it looked fantastic. they were standing outside of their fathers mansion. but a park like sitting is very cool too since most familys dont have a mansion. perhaps his back yard?

Maybe have one family do white shirts and black pants and the other family do black shirts and white pants (or something to that effect) Maybe so it is not too extreme do light blue and dark blue shirts and all wear same color pants...
But- doesn't your dad know how to distinguish? Sounds like maybe you are not to happy about this picture??? Maybe take two Pics - one with her family and one with yours???
You can do a collage of a bunch of single pictures and he can hang that above his fireplace...
