The optician said my eyes were R: 025/025x170 and L: 075/025x172

What do these numbers mean, and do I need glasses, or was he just trying to get money out of me?

This is an English optician, by the way- so that might make a difference to the numbers

He was an optometrist, not an optician. And in England, we don't have different doctors for different things- we have a general doctor who then refers you on (with a 6 month wait, of course!)

ok the -.25 is your sphere the second -.25 is your cylinder and the 170 is your axis the second -.25 and 170 have to do with your astigmatism and its positioning thats a small astigmatism...the same goes with your left eye -.75 is your sphere the -.25 is your cylinder and 172 is your axis...i mean if you do get glasses it should sharpen your vision esp if you need it for at night or what not or the board in school or driving it will help you... its up to you do you think you need it to see distance better my suggestion is get it...it will only help you not harm you

Your vision probably would be improved with that Rx- basically it means you are mildly far-sighted with a mild astigmastism. However minor, even prescriptions like yours do help alot in most cases. Apparently you have a refracting optician where you are- which do exist here stateside- but mostly opthamologists, optometrists do the refractions here.

the optician just did the testing, they cannot explain the results, that takes a opthalmologist, a real eye doctor, take your test results to one to find out if you need glasses.
