I'm homeschooled, so I have very, very little oppourtunity to meet members of the opposite sex of my own age (16). So, is it possible to be able to strike up a conversation with a random girl in the street, or does this only happen in films? Any advice on how to open a conversation, and in what context, like in a shop, etc. I guess I dress scene, so tight jeans, tight t shirts, side fringe, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First off...forget all the BS you've seen in movies. It's all romanticised, and rarely works out that way.
So...homeschooling. Often times I have seen homeschooled kids trying to incorporate themselves into regular adolescent society, and no offence, but the term socially retarded comes to mind. But there is still hope. Your posting this question here demonstrates at least a desire for some sort of social conformity which your parents can't teach you. In fact, the only way to learn social skills is with practice, and In time you'll get better at it.
So...for approaching girls. There's never been a 'right' way to do it. The basics, and I'm sure everyone else will agree. Be yourself. Keep things simple. Intruduce yourself, ask her name. Maybe a littel bit of background on yourself, and see where conversation takes you.
You might also want to ask your parents about more social time with your peers. Kids go to the mall and stuff like that. See if the local schools have any programs. A friend of mine was home schooled but lacked social skills, so he got a one day per week enrollment in a local school in order to learn and maintain the social interactions of his peer group. Maybe this might be something you'd be interested in.
Best of Luck to you.

Ok. Shop - H&M or Top Shop/Man.
It can be hard to talk to random people. Even though it seems cheesy, just go up to a girl that you like and say something like..."I was just looking at you and you are really pretty". It might seem creepy to you but any girl would be really flattered from a guy to say that to her. After you get talking for a while about anything, parties, bands or whatever, just say "So do you want to hang out sometime" or "Do you want to see a movie". You could even invite her to a party of one of your friends. There's loads of stuff to do like shopping, beach. Just list some stuff and see which one seems best. Try not to scare this girl lol. Just say a cheesy line or something. If a guy said something like that to me I would definately say yes. Also at your age people are very, very shallow so try and pick a nice, caring girl. Don't just go for the pretty, popular ones. Good luck. Really try a few times. I'm sure it will work. :)

ur tryin to hard hun, i'm 16 and not home schooled and some people I just don't talk to even when they're sitting right next to me. although there are times that a guy will just start talking to me in the middle of a school-related activity or after school or something. Like, my school has a coffeehouse every month that I manage and one of the former managers of it who graduated came to one of them and I was doing schoolwork as soon as I got everything set up and organized for the coffeehouse, and he came over and said, "What are you doing working? Your supposed to relax during the coffeehouse!" and now we're really good friends. Stuff like that is the best, like if you just go to borders or some other cafe place and see a girl working on something that you know anything about, bring that up, or if she's looking at a book or music that you like. But, don't try to dress the part...that's kinda dumb..just dress like you normally do...

Well... its really not that hard to just start talking to a girl you don't know. So many guys that I know now just started talking to me at random! I, personally, love it when a guy does that because it shows that they do have self-confidence and they are not afraid to show it. When you pass her on the street, just ask her what her name is... don't be afraid to let your confidence show! me and all of my friends absolutely LOVE it when guys show us that they are not afraid to let their true selves show! I am almost 15, and every boyfriend that I have had, I have met because they just struck up a random conversation with me.

That stuff really happens in real life but you have to be willing to put yourself out there, you can' t be the shy type! If you have a great personality, that will help you out a lot!!!

You need to get out of the house and start interacting with people. Confidence is key here.

pretend girls are blokes when you first start talking to them, its the naughty thoughts inside your head that make you stutter and go red, if you talk to them as if they are blokes its easy it worked for me, a one line humourous coment normaly gets there attention. for example. '' dam i wish i brought my fridge out with me tonight'''' why'' she will say. ''coz ive left my wallet on top of it'' there you go a houmourous joke at least a smile ice broken
