it all depends on the material check these different one out,

MUSLIN: Considered to be low end of the cotton spectrum, you may want to steer clear of these, as they tend to be one rough and tough sheet. They are generally used in children’s character theme bedding. TC counts here range from 128-140.

PERCALE: A smooth, flat, closely woven and combed fabric that comes in 100% cotton or 50/50 cotton/poly blends. Finer than muslin, expect TC’s here to range from 180-200.

PIMA or SUPIMA: A high quality cotton whose long fiber staple is somewhat similar to that of Egyptian cotton. The differences are geographical only. Pima is grown in the southwestern part of the U.S. and Egyptian is grown along the Nile River. Supima is made from extra-long staple Pima. The soft hand feel of Pima and Supima make them very desirable in bedding. Expect to find TC’s here from 200-300.

EGYPTIAN COTTON: This is the cotton queen of the Nile. Grown alongside the river, this quintessential cotton owes its superior durability, luster, and silky hand feel to its extra long fiber staple. TC counts range from 200-400.

Thread count in sheets can range from 80 to 700, although most stores sell sheets that range from 180 to 320. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric feels, but that doesn't necessarily mean the sheets will last longer (and sheets with a higher thread count are usually more expensive).

sateen and satin sheets make a night of sleeping impossible...you are always chasing your pillows around. They slip off too easily! Fun for other things, but sleeping is not FUN! Try any cotton sheets that are 400 + thread count. The 800 thread count is expensive but very worth it! They are like sleeping on a cloud...and stay nice and cool. NEVER scratchy......the higher the thread count, the nicer the sheets. Average thread count is 200 in Walmart, etc.....they will get scratchy.

I think 350 is the highest I have seen and boy are they expensive. I don't buy anythig under 200 count but thats on regular cotton. silk I don't think it matters how much the thread count is cause they are going to get snagged and cause those balls on your sheets.
