Hardware and software emulation of PS2 games on PS3.
Hardware is when games run on Emotion Engine chip. Emotion Engine chip is PS2's CPU. Only 20GB and 60GB NTSC PS3 versions have it. More than 90% of old games run.
Software emulation - those PS3 versions don't have EE chip, instead a bunch of programs lets PS2 games run. 80GB NTSC version has it and all euro PS3 versions (PAL regions). Software emulation isn't that good as hardware. On software emulation only 80% of old games run.
40GB has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games at all. It can run only PS1 games.
So the best version is NTSC 60GB.

The 20 and 60 gb has the emotion engine, which is the hardware used for the PS2. So, the 20 and 60 gb version can play most PS2 and PSX games.

The 80 gb version uses software emulation to play PS2/PSX games. Software emulation means that the developers have to write the software to make it compatible with the PS2/PSX games. For some games, it might take a long time to write the software, while for other games, it might only take a day or two. You've seen how well software emulation has worked for the 360. It's taken MS about 2 years just to make about 500 games backward compatible for the 360. The PS2 has quite a few thousand games, so you can imagine how long it's going to take to make all those games playable on the 80 gb PS3.

Go with the 60 gb. 20 gb isn't that much of a difference. If you need more space, you can always take out the internal hard drive and replace it with another one. You can probably also use an external hard drive.

It really depends what you are going to do with it. If you have a PS2 and ton of PS2 titles that you still play I would make sure to get the 60GB or the 20GB models if you still can find them since they don't make those particular ones anymore. I say this because those two models have a special chip (emotion chip) which make it possible to play the older titles perfectly. The newer 80GB model uses emulation software to play older titles. It does the job but you will always have issues when you use emulation to do things with. If I was you I would avoid the new 40GB model. It's cheaper ($399), but it only has two USB ports instead of four, doesn't have a flash card reader and its not backwards compatible with PS2 games.

hard question. its kinda up to u. Would get either the 60g or the 90g cuz both of them have all the things like flash card readers, play ps2 games, etc. And if u dont care about the flash card readers or you wont play ps2 games on the ps3, get the 40g. The 40g will come out in the US early november. Peopl said its not coming out, but it is.

The PS3 80GB is the best PS3 version since it has the biggest hard drive.
