If you spare the rod, meaning discipline, you will spoil the child and they won't learn. I agree with one of the previous posts that that is what is wrong with a lot of young people today. Their
parents did not take the time while they grew up to show them the proper way to act. A lot of them are rude, obnoxious, violent, and hateful. You see a lot of older people today that grew up in the 1920's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's knew how to act. They knew their actions had serious consequences. So to spare the rod is to spoil the child.

The Scripture says (more accurately) "He that spareth the rod (withholds correction), hateth his son (doesn't care how big of a jerk he grows up to be)." PROPER forms of correction lend to the psychological development of a child where social behavior is concerned which in turn allows a spiritual discipline to be instilled as a child that will serve them well in adulthood. The Scripture says, "train up a child in the way it should go. When it grows old, it will not depart."

it means, if you spare the rod, you will spoil the child.
means not disciplining your child will make them worse.
look around at the world today... see how many parents slack on disciplining their child, and then look at their childs behavior.

It means if you beat your kid for doing wrong,
the welfare system is going to
file a charge against you for child abuse.
And if you don't beat the little darling
when he does a wrong and turns
out to be a little"$-h-i-t",
they are going to get you for child neglect.
So the only solution to this problem is,
when you are having sex with someone
of the opposite sex, use protection
and don't get pregnant.
This way, you won't have to make
a religious decision about having
an abortion or worrying about going to hell.

It means if you do not correct / discipline your child he/she will grow with negative attidudes, will grow spoiled.
It does not mean you must hit your child for anything wrong he/she do, it is not a license for child abuse.
