What purpose do they serve?

Steeples are pagan fertility symbols (phallus symbols) the Catholic Church adopted from paganism. The use of steeples is probably condemned in the Bible. (Ezekiel 8:17)

And yes, the Washington Monument, a Masonic symbol, is also adapted from the same source.

They serve no purpose in the worship of the Creator God.

Please do a google search on the subject.

So that people could find the church from a distance.

If you look around the tallest buildings are the property of the richest business in the community.
Today that seems to be banks. It used to be the Church, and the Steeple was the best way for the designers to get height with the technolgy they had at the time.

(Buildings that double as antennae are a special case)

They do not serve any purpose these days. But in days gone by, they used to have clocks in the steeples. Many people did not own a watch or a clock, so they did not know the correct time to go to church.
