Try calling a local bakery, either a small one or one in your grocery store or Wal-Mart.
They may be willing to sell a box to you, don't forget you'll need a board to put it on, also.

A 12x18 would be a 1/2 sheet cake so two of them together would be a full sheet cake. Go to a store that sells cake decorating supplies or a local bakery, even a bakery in the grocery store. Ask them to sell you a full sheet cake board and box. They should all have that size. I used to work in a bakery in a grocery store. We got 1/2 sheet cakes in already baked and put two together to make a full sheet cake. I think I have done it at home too, but I don't usually make them that large at home. Anyway, your idea will work.

Here is a link to the Wilton serving guide...tells ya how many servings you get out of each size of cake...
http://www.wilton.com/cake/cakeprep/baking/times/party_2inch.cfm
It should be fine if you put the 2 side my side...i did this for a full sheet cake for a graduation party. The only problem i came across was trying to hide the 'dip' or 'crease' (whatever you want to call it) where the cakes meet when i went to frost it...i had to put some extra frosting there to hide the line that showed where the cakes came together....
To get a box i would go to Joanns or Micheals and buy a full sheet cake box or ask your local bakery for one....that should be big enough
ALSO, word of advice....makes sure your cake board or whatevery you are putting your cakes on is VERY sturdy...this is going to be a heavy cake and ONE cake board will not support it. I would get some Foam Board from JoAnns and glue/tape/attatch it to the cake board, otherwise your cake will crack b/c it wasn't supported enough.

I'd make several smaller cakes. It will be much easier to transport.
I'm sure you could get a box that big from a bakery, but I think it would be easier to make two smaller ones.
I'm assuming you are thinking of decorating these smaller cakes together to make one big cake, that's why you want to put them together? Why not make one cake, decorate that one, then have some cupcakes decorated with a similar theme? It wouldn't be one large cake so it would be way easier to move and easier to serve.

My advice is to find a serving dish or board FIRST, then make the cake sized to hold it.
You may also conder making 4-5 normal-sized cakes of varying flavors and shapes, that way if someone doesn't like the one flavor you do, they're not stuck w/ that but have a choice.

Have you thought about putting them on top of each other and making a lay cake, would be easy to transport.
