They are quite different in many ways, like English and French. Vietnamese uses Roman letters, like most of Europe and America do. Japanese has 3 scripts. Kanji is copied from Chinese and has a different symbol for each word. Katakana and Hiragana are phonetics. In Japanese magazines, some Roman letters and Arabic numbers are often used. I studied chinese and japanese in college, and i studied some Vietnamese on my own when I had a girlfriend from ther whose mother spoke no English or french.

What is the difference between the American and Russian languages? Everything. Same thing for Vietnamese and Japanese. Two completely different things.

The difference is like between Basque and its neighbor languages (Spanish and French).

For Japaenese speaker, The difference between English and other European language is like a dialect. vietnamese and Japanese is completely different in both of grammar and vocabulary. There's no relations between them.
