I know what you mean, it annoys me aswell and I want to tell them to shut up. I think it's because the weights they are lifting ARE pretty heavy and they have to grunt to get through it....like being constipated.

As a martial art practitioner, I had sometimes make some noise using my fists, although it's not common for me.
Best explanation from studies and experience: maybe a resilient primal rage that need to be expressed and to help forget the pain in extreme condition! Our mind must win over the body!
I don't know why, but it helped me sometimes lifted or pushed something that normally I wasn't able, at first, to accomplished.
That's maybe why there's actually more women only training centre... so the males won't annoy the ladies! ;)
Have a nice day.

Well its a natural thing to do when guys are lifting heavy. If you try to keep that "grunt" in when your lifting really heavy weights then you probably won't be able to breath and also you start getting a lot of chest pain. I know its annoying but hey, your in a public gym.

Some of them do it because supposedly it makes the workout more effective but most just do it to seem big and manly
