To say that Islam is divided to this degree would be very incorrect.
While Muslims may practise practical acts in Islam differently and follow different schools of thought, Islam in one and the same. There is no bloodshed over such matters, but when we get to the weaknesses of man that are so far from Islam, we see violence and unIslamic acts being committed.
But we are all united under the banner of the Shahadah, whether we be Shi'a or Sunni Muslims.

to start with there are not 400 in numbers and secondly ,all have the same basic teaching...and killing any one is not permitted .....
and those who do so is totally based on wrong information...
( just like you have been told about the 400 sects of Islam..it really shows how deep ignorance goes )

Yes some ignorant Muslims kill each other. They are misguided followers of Satan. I don't deny. But they are drop in a bucket compared to millions who are deeply devoted to God and glorify him day and night.
IT IS THE WORST LIE I HAVE EVER HEARD
that Muslims have 400 sects. Yes there could be some 10 to 15 twisted minds groups but they all pray to God exactly like all 1.3 billion Muslims. Fundamental belief of Muslims is always exactly the same and has never changed a bit in 1400 plus years.
They all believe in one God and that Muhammad is Last Messenger of God. None of them have any doubt about this belief. They all believe in Day of Judgement , hell and heaven.
Can you say that about Christianity?

it certainly makes sence that the family knows better than the outsiders.

It is probably like Christianity... you have the equivalent of Baptist, Catholics, Methodist, etc. You have Catholics and Protestants killing each other for 1000s of years (Ireland, history of the Catholic church, England vs France, etc).
Depending on your view, they are all true or none of them are (or somewhere in between).
