I was accused yesterday of not being able to think for myself because I believe in evolution. That assertion confused me a bit as to what thinking for oneself might actually mean. What do you guys think?

Silly Girl, you are allowing someone who is brainwashed to judge you?

I do not myself, believe in evolution, but that is not a basis to claim that you are not thinking. I imagine, that you are a deep thinker...Do not let those who answer, effect your day.

Since none of us have original ideas about these issues, it is indeed hard to think for oneself. After all, where did folks here get their ideas about either evolution or intelligent design? Yet, we need to go through some process of questioning and critically thinking about whatever we choose to believe or we're mere unthinking parrots. If we have indeed looked at all the evidence and have thought long and hard about what we decide to believe and someone still calls us unthinking, what can we do but let it go?

The person who thinks for them self never stops studying because they know they will never have all the answers. They consider everything they have learned through their own experiences and study and try to reach the most logical conclusion possible at that time. If new evidence shows up they consider that as well, even if it means rethinking their position.

They never blindly accept what somebody else says or writes. It may go into the mix but is never the main ingredient.

If you find yourself reading or listening to one particular person or viewpoint, you risk not thinking for yourself and should deliberately seek other opinions.

Thinking for yourself is not for the lazy at heart.

As for evolution, the evidence is overwhelming.

Actually science is a lot like religion.

It makes claims with a sort of authority that makes you believe what it tells you just like religion does. This makes us tend to accept the hypotheses as fact and discount any other possibility. In essence it asks us not to think beyond the hypotheses.

Time has taught me something about science. Hypotheses can and do change. We always need to consider other possibilities, be it in religion or science. Blind faith is always dangerous.

Very, very few people in the world have ever been able to think for themselves.
Everything one thinks for the most part comes from the accumulation of the 6,000 years of human knowledge ( just throwing that figure out there).

Everyone else thinks that anyone who disagrees with them is "not thinking for themselves". Because if they were, they would obviously come to the logical conclusion that the first person had already come to! No one could ever LOGICALLY disagree with me! I'm right, how could they? So it MUST be that someone else has given them some bad idea...

It means you look at many different opinions and ideas, consider them carefully, look at the research that went into these concepts, and decide what makes the most sense to you.

do you believe in evolution because you came to the conclusion it was Right or because some one told you it was Right?

if you came to it of your own thinking, then you are thinking for your self. if you are thinking it is Right because it was brow beat into you & you buy it. it is not thinking for your self!
