They are actually Okinawan Kata. Developed by Anko Itosu, Pinan means Peaceful Mind. Referring to having a great sense of confidence.

In the OKINAWAN HOGEN dialect it means "safe from harm" HEIAN which is the JAPANESE name for the same kata means "peaceful mind"

i learned it in TKD pyung on , but it was the same... the meaning I learned was "peaceful and relieved"
