They are actually Okinawan Kata. Developed by Anko Itosu, Pinan means Peaceful Mind. Referring to having a great sense of confidence.

pinan is the name given to the basic Kata's in wado-ryu ,pinan nidan,shodan,yodan and godan.basically starter forms for students and when more experienced forms that interrogate your inner self.

What? this is the first time i herd it mentioned as peacefull mind, i remember being told it means beginer kata or basic kata or something or starting kata, will ask my Shihan

In the OKINAWAN HOGEN dialect it means "safe from harm" HEIAN which is the JAPANESE name for the same kata means "peaceful mind"

i learned it in TKD pyung on , but it was the same... the meaning I learned was "peaceful and relieved"
