Hi everyone,
It's been 6 days now since I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth removed on my lower jaw. My jaw is still very stiff and slightly sore. At night, the pain seems much worse. I'm taking ibuprofen to control it. I can't open my mouth very wide at all - maybe about an inch, and then my jaw resists and opening becomes painful.
I'm just wondering if this is all pretty normal stuff, even 6 days after surgery? I've known a few people who have had the procedure and they fully recovered within 3-4 days. I have a one week follow-up with my oral surgeon tomorrow, but I'm just wondering what other people's experiences have been.

I am going through this right now too. I went back, had an x-ray and they thought the OS had left a bone fragment in. I traveled 60 miles to see him only to hear that it is DRY SOCKET! I would have never known because the actual "socket" felt ok- but my jaw, head, other teeth- EVERYTHING are KILLING ME and it is much much worse at night.
Go back and make sure you aren't in the same boat with me. If things had been going normal you would be feeling better every day.

I am 45 years old and had 3 wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon 8 days ago. My jaw will not open more than finger width worth and to make things worse one of my molars had a hole in it that one of the wisdom tooth had dug into so this whole time I have been suffering from severe pain because my jaw will not open up far enough for my dentist to remove that infected molar. I am now having to go back to the oral surgeon to have him remove this molar because he can only administer an IV sedative which the dentist cannot do. I have also lost almost 15 pounds during this entire ordeal and almost lost my job. I was told it would be done on a Friday and I would return the following Monday.

I hope you visited your Dentist for a post operative check up and he should have advised a muscle relaxant medication for your problem. Wisdom tooth removal involves opening your mouth for a long time, so your jaw muscles would have become stiff, just like a sprain, so dont panic, take the muscle relaxant and do the jaw excercise or simply use a chewing gum to give mild activity on the surgery side.If you are not ok in three days visit your dentist for a post op dental xray,he will solve your problem if any

pain after wisdom tooth removal is common, but restricted mouth opening is an issue to be looked into. the wisdom tooth is located very close to the temporomandibular joint, i.e; the joint that connects ur lower jaw to ur skull. the massive force used to extract the tooth might have dislocated the jaw slightly. JUST DO THE FOLLOWING CHECKS-
1) Is there any clicking sound while opening the mouth?
2) stand in front of the mirror and open ur mouth normally. do u see any deviation of ur lower jaw to any one side??
3) are u not able to open ur mouth for more than 2 finger's breadth? (2 cm)
IF UR ANSWER IS yes FOR MORE THAN 2 OF THESE QUESTIONS, CONSULT UR ORAL SURGEON, CUZ ITS A MOST PROBABLE CASE OF JAW DISLOCATION.
IT CAN BE CORRECTED BY SIMPLE EXTERNAL MECHANICAL FORCE BY UR SURGEON.
dont take too many painkillers, it may cause a stomachburn. get ur jaw corrected by ur dentist, and follow his instructions, u might have 2 do few simple exerces for few days.

Veeeeeeeeery normal.. Half of my face was swollen for an entire month and two weeks after the surgery, when they took the upper left one out.. A month for the upper right.. And two weeks for the lower ones.. It's all bruised inside and it'll take time to heal.. And you had two removed at the same time.. In my case they sawed the jaw bone to get them out, in all four cases.. Which was horrid!
Anyway, it'll feel better soon enough =)

No i've had my wisdom teeth out and by the 3rd or fourth day there was pretty much no pain. You probably have a dry socket. Your gonna have to go back to the dentist

It could take weeks possibly it has happend to some one i know he he ws inn ULTRA SERIOUS pain for a month

Call your oral surgeon to be sure... you may have developed dry sockets, which are dangerous for allowing infection to set in.
