And blame this on religion; yet when Stalin and Kim Il Sung have done things, they're not so keen to criticise? Could it perhaps be that evil things can be done either 'in the name of religion' OR of atheism?

i agree with mancloud, causes are complex and interlinked, and to blame atrocities on either religion OR atheism is unfair. I am merely stating that the poor reasoning which blames religion for everything could be equallly poorly applied to atheism.

yes they can! but most of the worlds problems, especially now, is caused by religious arrogance

the political actions of tyrants, can not be blamed on Atheists, for we are not a religion, they were just political views and decisions based on the individual.

The Spanish Inquisition were a religious order formed by the Catholic King Ferdinand & his wife Isabella to maintain orthodoxy over the people of Spain.

The Crusades were insituted by various popes to 'free' christian places, such as Jerusalem, from islamic control, so both can be fairly and squarely laid at the door of religion, and specifically the catholic church

Stalin and Kim Il Sung were roundly critcised from the moment they gained office, in the case of Stalin he was criticised before coming to power, let us not forget he 'disposed' of those that threatended his path, remember Trotsky?

The reality is that most atrocities are commited in the name of religion, or at least a belief system, as these tend to polarise the views of people to such and extent that war becomes inevitable.

the problem you have with runnming a parallel for atheism is that it is not a constructed belief system, you do not groups of atheists meeting in the same way as religionists do, there are no atheist meeting rooms, so atheists could not be considered a 'group' of people having an organisation that could wage a war, atheists are effectively anyone that does not perceive themselves to have a religious view.

The parallel could be drawn with politics and religion, as political veiws could reasonably be argued as belief systems, and therefore atrocities commited for political reasons could be seen as having no religious foundation, that said, there is often a religious motivation behind a political action.

In short, no you cannot say that 'evil things' are done in the name of atheists in that way.

You are actually saying that people are not so keen to criticise STALIN!!

Plus, I think it is a pretty big leap to say that any attrocity that is not religious must therefore be the work of Atheism. There is usually a root cause, religion is just one of them.

Do you know anyone now who isn't quick to blame Stalin for the millions of his own people that he murdered or let starve to death?

However, I think people are critical of Christians when they do things like this because there is the expectations that Christians would at least try to do better than your average person. Christians ought not minimize or ignore their collective sins of the past.

People complain because it is a part of our history, a statement was made many years ago that a nation that does not learn from its history is doomed to repeat it! we do not want to repeat history of such a thing even tho our leaders are leading us to many things which will cause disappointments within the human race. We need a new day like the bright and morning star.

good point, I hardly see the athiests comment about atrocities committed by secular governments. The problem is that any belief system can be used to justify hatred and violence

Because Christians ought to know better. It is a betrayal of faith to be violent.....it is not a betrayal of fallen human nature.
