I have a full time job apart from painting. But I do paint a lot for family and friends and have a lot of talent. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could sell my paintings or have any ideas to make some extra money that would not take a lot of extra time outside of painting. Personal experiences would be great.

I don't want to have to actually be there to sell the paintings. I don't mind giving a small cut.

THAT IS THE QUESTION ALL ARTIST ASK. If I knew the secret to selling art work I would be a millionaire.
You just have to start working at it. Sell to family and friends, and co-workers. Go to art shows and flea markets List on ebay and other art venues. If you work is GOOD (and even though your friends tell you it's good, it may actually stink) you may be able to get into some galleries. .But my darling they will tell you what their percentage is. That's not something you get to control. They pay the bills and know what kind of profit they need to keep the doors open.

And keep in mind that there are a lot of great artist out there who are trying to do the same thing you are.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult selling artwork, but there are venues that you can use which might help. We are artists ourselves, and own a framing business, so we frame many paintings for the artists in our town (seems like the majority of people where we live are artists).

Many paintings of the locals were sold during our PumpkinFest;and other art festivals (get yourself a booth at your own local functions). Some are sold when placed outside of local popular businesses.

Others are displayed in shows, which are bought by people who attend the shows. Having a website with photos of your paintings is helpful.

Donating paintings to local charity functions gets your name out there; so does having your artwork hang in a popular restaurant or hospital, etc. These are some of the ways that you can sell your artwork, especially if your paintings are very good.

You could try your local art supply store. They usually display work by the artist, especially if that's where you get your supplies from. It's like advertising for them. You could sell your work through them and they may or may not charge a comission fee. I've seen stores that do both.

Also, public libraries and community centers. Libraries usually have free art shows and people can see your work that way. Same for community centers. Make sure you have business cards wherever you display your work. They don't have to be expensive; just print them yourself if you want.

Starving artist shows are a favourite of mine. My dad took me to those when I was little and now I do the same with my kids. Some of the best art I have ever found was at those shows.

At your place of business you could also 'donate' of of your pieces. Ask that your contact info be placed close by. Businesses don't usually turn down free art, if it's good, and the worse they can say to you is no.

Make up a brochure of your work (most printers now come with the software to do this) and distribute them to your library, bookstore, music store, local furniture stores etc.

Can't think of anything else besides ebay!

Hope that helps and good luck!

You can attempt to negotiate a show with a local gallery or as many galleries as you would like, complete with opening night, your invites and theirs for exposure. You can also look online--there are websites that will sponsor a slide of your photo, which gives you exposure for selling, as well as create your own website and include as many paintings, or 'painting of the month' or however you would like to design this. Another possibility is the creation of cards from one painting.

festivals, art conventions. These are usually done on the weekends, and sometimes if you ARE there doing a meet & greet you will sell more paintings!
You can alos try local art galleries to see if they will offer your work in there location for sale.

then there's always EBAY ??

There is a serious new online gallery that is focussed on helping up-and-coming artists promote and sell their work. It's worked very well for me:
artistika.ca
Good luck!
