Will I get a picture at the 720p setting or will it not play at all? If it won't play, can I downconvert the file to 720p to watch the video? thanks.

Yes. Any 720p TV can play 1080i content.
However, only i.link, component, DVI, or HDMI inputs support HD inputs.
If you use composite/S-video cables, the best you can get out of the camcorder is 480i.

It won't play at 1080, but it should play at 720. You could always go the safe route and use normal RCA cables (Red, White, Yellow) for a standard video signal. Any TV can display that.
