As a Christian, you become obligated to your spouse and to your family, which can take time away from other acts of service:
"I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord." 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 (NIV); see also 1 Timothy 5:8.
On the positive side, you gain a companion, one who ought to be able to help you and share your life with. Having a family will also help give you insight into the meaning of love and to appreciate God's blessings.

Well, if you have a mate you will be trying to please that person and will have less time for God and other friends.
On the flip side, you will also gain in dealing and growing relationships. It is the most initimate relationships that we must sacrifice the most. The physical side of having a mate can be great and initmate.

You give up living for self. You have to consider your partners needs.
You gain love, acceptance, companionship and a partner in purpose. You gain a helper and confidant.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-11
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

you lose loneliness, selfishness and pettiness.
you gain a teammate, helper, and partner...
instead of fighting alone, you are part of a team.
Being respectful and honorable and loving them more than
yourself are just the actions you take to keep them
safe and happy and co-operative, wink.
Being part of a team, always has it's positives
and negatives, but hopefully you have more good than bad.
hug.

In a love relationship the good better outweigh the bad or you should get out.
We each make concessions for the one we love.

Too much for me to want a wife...if that is what you mean by "mate"! I have many lovers but no wives.
