Just got a HD TV and the HD box but since we have hooked it up the sound is not very loud. Some stations are okay, others I have to turn the volume up all the way and I still can not hear. Do I need special cables, or to hook up something different???

The problem you describe will not be fixed by a HDMI cable! And anyone who would pay $90 for a standard size HDMI (6'-8') is an idiot.
Your problem most likely lies in the volume adjustment menus of both your HDTV and your cable box. This should have been taken care of by the cable/satellite installer.

Depending on the make and model of your TV, some do not come with very good speakers. Some may only have 10-15 watts. Also your HD box may have a separate volume control, be sure to have this up almost all the way. Your better off getting a surround sound Home theater in a box setup to get better sound. Especially with HD.

People noticed this a lot when switching from a VCR to a DVD player.

The sound standard for HD TV is Dolby Digital 5.1. The same type of sound you get with a DVD.

This type of sound can swing from very quiet TO VERY LOUD. Because of this - the average volume level is less.

It gets really annoying when you have the volume up for a show, then a commercial in Standard Def comes along and blasts you with sound.

Here is what I suggest: Hook the sound output from the CATV box to an input on your AV receiver. Just like your DVD player. Then use your 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I normally use TV speakers for casual watching, but last night trying to listen to "Bones" and "Criminal Minds" I gave up and turned on the AV receiver. bliss

Do you have a motorola HD cable box ? If so, go into the menu and audio set-up. Be sure Stereo is selected and then be sure HEAVY COMPRESSION is selected.

I had the same problem you are describing until I switched to heavy compression. I don't know what this is exactly.... but the volume was increased quite a bit since I changed this setting.

Good luck.
