This aspect of Christianity probably came from Mithras, a figure similar to Jesus in several respects, who was worshipped in Rome just before the emergence of Christianity. The virgin birth of Mithras in turn probably originated in the virgin birth of even earlier gods such as Venus and Ra. Having had a virgin birth was pretty common among ancient gods.

Note that the "Old Testament Prophecies" of the messiah's virgin birth were not written down in "final" form until several centuries after the Mithraic virgin birth was incorporated into Christianity.

Because it was a popular mythology of the time, back when people thought the sun was a chariot blazing across the sky and thunder was the wrath of Thor.

Mithras was born of a virgin, on December 25, long before Jesus. After Jesus died, many of the Mithras myths were incorporated into his biography.
