As a tattoo artist, I will give you the advice I give everyone who comes in with a neck tattoo design. (DISCLAIMER: I am referring to tattoos on the side and front of the neck, above the shirtline, tattoos on the back of the neck are actually getting fairly commonplace)
A neck tattoo is AND isn't safe... it isn't physically dangerous... but can be potentially EXTREMELY dangerous for your professional career. Unless you are completely satisfied with never working in corporate america, then stray away from neck tat's. I have my entire neck done, sparrows on the sides, a koi on the back, and a queen of hearts on the front, but this is what I do, it's what I've been doing and what I always will do... so think hard first, it's a big commitment.

Neck tattoos do not pose any more risk than a tattoo anywhere else. But, some artists will not do them because of the location. If you are near NE Ohio, then I recommend Dave @ Atom Bomb Tattoo (www.atombombtattoo.com). I have a tiny tattoo on my temple and he was the only one willing to do it for me in the area. Call around to different shops, check out their work, talk to them about your idea and go from there and good luck. I have a tattoo behind my right ear on my neck, and I love it.

Think about it. How are you going to feel about this permanant mark on your neck in ten years? Is it going to interfere with your lifestyle and job? Is it something you will want to be looking at when you're older? I always wondered about that when I see people 18 to 25 years old with flames and nudity tattoos on their necks, arms, fingers, and wrists. It really looks tacky.

It's a pretty big world..
You might want to narrow
down the field, if you are
serious about finding a
good shop near you.

oh my goodness at some of these answers. i have the chinese symbol for "patience" on the back of my neck. i have never heard of a risk. you just need to go to a clean shop. i have one on my back, hip and neck and my hip was by far the worse, the neck did hurt but it was bearable. if you really want it, i would encourage you to do it. its your body and if thats how you show your artistic side then rock on. if you are a guy and work somewhere where tats are not allowed, you will need somethning to cover it up..mine are always covered
