Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Lots of numerical scientific data proving it real here:

Proof that most scientists think it's real and mostly caused by us here:

This website lists and explains the greenhouse gasess both natural and man induced. In a nutshell, they are causing a very slow increase to global temperatures. We have colonized and habitated based on existing temperature and as the world wams places we have lived in will become poor choices and others will become good. The biggest concern seems to be melting of icecaps which will raise ocean levels and flood coastal areas. Also areas get hotter and drier and that exacerbates forest fires, droughts and other disasters, perhaps including hurricanes. Weather is complex and other natural forces are at work also but this man made contribution is significant.

If it is a threat to the world it must also be a threat to us ,since we happen to live on this world .

The world can get hotter making it harder to grow crops in the hot parts but maybe easier in the cold parts,

But we could have potable water shortage ,and if the seas do rise ,millions of people could be displaced and wanting or having to move to higher ground where there are people already, and so causing world wide civil unrest and violence

This is just for a start, and many secondary side effects are to follow ,such as rising food prices and harder to get drinking water.

The biggest threat from globular warmation is a political one. Whether or not it is real, it is being used as a way to garner power and money by a crew of shysters. Global warming is what Global cooling was thirty years ago. The climate is really too big for us to hurt too much. That does not mean we should not be good stewards of the planet and try to reduce waste as much as possible, but most of the "solutions" being proposed are idiotic and too small to do anything. Trying to come up with an efficient "green" SUV or BHV (Big Honkin' Vehicle) is like trying to come up with a safe hand grenade. The best way to coming up with a solution to environmental problems is to rethink the basic way we do things. Why do we build communities where you have to drive EVERYWHERE and then try to make cars "green".

Global climate cycles are no more a threat now than they ever were.

Here is truth about global warming:

Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is
becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.
As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

Warming is good for the planet. It would be a lot harder on us if the planet was colder.

The climate of the Earth is always changing. The climate can never be static, or the same. The Earth is either getting warmer or colder at any point of time.

There are many causes for climate change. Now our climate is being influenced by the Sun. The Sun's output also varies over time. And now it's running a little warmer than it does at other times.

In time, the Sun will cool down again, and so will the Earths climate.

The threat is to our liberty.
Real or not, it will be used as a tool to consolidate global power by the oil for food UN crowd.

It is as threat if we go along with UN proposals that would have wealthier Nations and countries grovel like dogs so that they could foster meaningless projects that accomplish little in lesser countries. History would show that the UN just gets into aimless circle jerks without heavy US backing.
Their idea of carbon trading would only create wealth for financial speculators siphoning off large amounts of money that could actually be used toward your percieved problem
