The Bible says the earth will remain forever - no, I don't think so. Where?
I know that Jesus said that the meek will inherit the earth and yes, this is literally going to come true but it has not happened yet.
God creates a new heavens and a new earth at the end -
Revelations ch. 21:1 (see also II Pet. 3:13).
OK, you want the timetable, here it is:
1. Jesus comes back for his Church, living and dead, and takes her to heaven. He judges her there (bema) and she becomes his Bride. The Church is still waiting for this.
2. The Great Tribulation happens and awful things, like Antichrist's kingdom, persecution, wars, etc., happen on earth (Rev. 6 onwards).
3. At the end of 7 years, he comes back to earth, with his Church (Rev. 19) and judges everything. He judges all those alive at the time (Matt. 25:32+ sheep and goats).
4. He sets up his kingdom in Jerusalem (Rev. 20; Zech. 14:16+) and reigns for a thousand years.
5. After that, there's a final rebellion, which is put down, and Satan, the Beast and the False Prophet are consigned to the lake of fire.
6. Then we get to the bit about the new heaven and the new earth.
It's all a big study, but it's worth it.

If you mean that the Bible says the earth will remain forever because of this passage...
Ecclesiastes 1:4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever (ôlaÌm).
Then you should know that the Hebrew word translated into English as "forever"
×¢ïÖ¸×× Ã´laÌm - A masculine noun meaning a very long time. The word usually refers to looking forward but many times expresses the idea of looking backward. It may cover a given person's lifetime (Exo_21:6; 1Sa_1:22); a period of many generations (Jos_24:2; Pro_22:28); the time of the present created order (Deu_33:15; Psa_73:12); time beyond this temporal sphere, especially when used regarding God (Gen_21:33; Psa_90:2; Dan_12:2, Dan_12:7).
As to what is going to happen to the earth...
2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

Hi Lisa,
You've got me working overtime here!
You have a very good answer from Martin S but I feel that he only goes part way of answering your question.
Homechrc' eschatology is unbelievable and reflects much of the false teaching that abounds in the Christian church today!
I'll just add a little to Martin S' answer.
As Martin points out this earth will be destroyed because it represents the very place where Jesus had to give up His life to save sinners.
The earth is the ONLY place in the entire universe where sin has sway. (Sorry Star Wars fans!).
On this isolated planet the cosmic war between Christ and Satan is being played out and we are players in that war.
"And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." Revelation 12:7-9.
The reason is recorded in Isaiah 14:12-15 & Ezekiel 28:12-19. A covering cherub by the name of Lucifer challenged God and wanted to be as God - ruler of the Universe.
Lucifer became Satan, his character changed from an angel of light to an accuser. In Job 1 we find him accusing Job of only being faithful to God because God had protected him.
Satan was defeated at the Cross. It was on the Cross that Jesus demonstrated the full character of God by dying for the sake of man.
Revelation 20 gives a full rundown on the final events of earth's existence. It is clear that there will be TWO resurrections. Jesus speaks of this, "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." John 5:28,29.
Jesus says, "And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work." Revelation 22:12.
"His reward is with Him", therefore we must conclude that judgment has already occurred because it would be ludicrous to think people would be taken to heaven then judged and found to be not worthy and kicked out!
Peter tells us, "For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?"
Clearly judgment begins with God's people to sort out the sheep and the goats. Matthew 25:32-46.
We understand that this judgment began in 1844 with the end of the 2300 day prophecy of Daniel 8:14, so it is ongoing NOW!
"And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:8.
The wicked are destroyed when Jesus returns, the Saints are redeemed and return to heaven with Jesus for 1000 years. Rev.20:6.
"And at that day the slain of the LORD shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground. Jeremiah 25:33.
During this 1000 year period the earth is desolate. It is NOT inhabited as some are teaching so that those who missed out on the first resurrection will get a second chance! There is NO second chance!
"Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are..." Rev.20:7-10.
At the SECOND resurrection the wicked are raised to life and encouraged by Satan and his fallen angels (demons) they try to storm the New Jerusalem.
God now intervenes and destroys the wicked and then the old earth.
The New Earth is created, the New Jerusalem descends and the Saints are now able to inhabit this new creation.
I hope that this has clarified Martin S' contribution.
God Bless,
H'chat.
