my son's 1st birthday in Jan07 was small, just close family and his one friend, subs and cake at home. then when summer hit, everyone else started having these big 1st birthday parties, where our family were invited too, even though we aren't so close.

i just don't know what to do about his 2nd birthday. am i being rude to have something smaller at home and not invite our friend's and their families? is it kind of tradition now that we all go to each other's parties, so i should make it include everyone?

It's totally up to you. Just make sure that, within a reasonable time, you find some way to entertain each of the people that entertained you.

People should do what they want and can afford for children's birthday parties. If you don't have room or don't feel that you can afford a large party, then go with a small one. Some folks just seem to go to extremes where kids parties are concerned. Do whatever suits YOU and don't feel like you have to reciprocate for every invitation your family receives. It's just not practical sometimes and can put you in the poor house in a hurry.

Do what's suitable for you. If you can afford to invite everybody then do it. You might want to go cheaper on the food. Maybe order pizza or have grilled hamburgers or hotdogs and chips or potato salad, etc. Make punch instead of buying soda. But if you can't afford it, then don't worry about it. You aren't trying to impress people by having a big birthday party. You are having a celebration for the birth of your son.

Invite who you want...spend what you can afford
a 2 yr old isn't going to remember the party...believe me I don't remember any until I turned 6 and the memory isn't very clear
it sounds like the others are trying to impress their friends...why?
have a small party so you can enjoy it with your son...not so you have to worry what other people think

Start as you mean to carry on, you can choose to keep up with the "bigger and better" each year crowd, or chance starting your own family tradition on how birthdays are to be celebrated in your immediate family - whatever you have the time and commitment to!

You don't have to do it.
