I read somewhere that smokers are more likely to develop fat around the midriff, also cause the lungs dont work so good smokers tend to not excersise as much.. it is supposed to be an appetite supressant and it also rots the lining in the stomach so the godness of food is not absorbed so well.. for some unknown reason i smoke 15 a day... doh.............

the other answers are pretty much right, but they don't give you the detail.
Nicotine is a natural appetite suppressant, so people who smoke tend to eat less.
Thus people who quit smoking (remember 99% of the time you quit it, or it quits you) do tend to gain weight.
Smoking will not make you fat. It will make your clothes stink, your breath bad, you wallet thinner, and cut 5-15 years off your life.

No, it speeds up your metabolism as it's a stimulant (and also can act as an appetite suppressant) which is why so many smokers get fat when they quit. That and they need something to do with their hands and mouth (that is acceptable in the office), so snacking is a good surrogate.

No actually cigarettes have a tendency to take your appetite away. Its when people stop smoking is when they are prone to gaining weight, because lots of people smoke as a substitute for eating....so when they quit, or try to quit, they go back to eating a lot.

Smoking cigarettes curbs the appetite so would not make you fat unless you are smoking pot and get the munchies.

No eating too much and not exercising enough makes you fat, smoking makes you stink.

I don't think so. Giving up smoking often means you put on weight though, as you may tend to 'snack' as a displacement activity to smoking

Smoking suppresses your appetite; thus you tend to eat less (in most cases), which can result in losing weight since you are taking in fewer calories.
It certainly does not make you gain weight.

no it doesnt. what it actually does is shrinks your organs, so people think they're losing weight when really it's that their organs are becoming smaller, and the longer they smoke, the more their organs will keep shrinking until it can't shrink anymore, and that can cause serious problems for such areas as your heart and lungs. so, in reality, it's destroying your organs over time.
