in daze gone by various religions had customs that today we consider silly, superstitious, or down right barbaric but I am sure those practicing it at the time thought they were quite pious for doing so. So... what beliefs and customs do you think people will laugh at or be horrified by 1000 yrs from now?
Personally I am hoping religion itself will be thought of this way but... we will see...

Since most revolve around a day of judgement or Armageddon type end of the world scenario, I would assume that they would be viewed as crazy doomsday cults. Do you think they would have given up on Jesus returning, or the rapture happening by then? Oh and these fools who come up with the world will end dates like 2012, hmmm probably not, there will be some daft loonies around now who will give them dates in the future to dwell on.
Anyway I'll be there to see it but then that's the nature of the game.

{{{Jamus}}} Good to see you again!
I have been sitting here thinking of what to write as honestly the stuff done in the far past was some really crazy, evil stuff. In modern day religion, I guess the only thing that I would hope would be erradicated would be suicide bombers and the nutty mob mentality that brings people chanting for death of others because of their beliefs. I cant think of much more that are truly harmful to fellow earthlings nowadays.
With that said, Answer Man makes a good point. Alot of people will take that as some sort of right wing nut answer, but in all actuality he described it in its true form. Whether or not one believes a fetus is a "human" when aborted, one can not deny the body, brain, and heart are fully formed on those that are vacuumed out in this way. Anyhow, Im rambling now! Gods peace :)

I hope religion itself too, but humans have shown quite a tendency to make new religions as our understanding of the universe increases. Look at Scientology, for example. We are inherently illogical and irrational beasts. I have a feeling that the 15% - 20% of people worldwide currently professing no spirituality will remain relatively constant. This sadens me, but what can I do....

It depends on if society keeps growing, or if it stops.
A lot can happen in the next 1000 years.

I think people will be horrified by the practice of an expectant mother willingly going to a "doctor" who inserts a tool into the woman and dismembers the baby in her, thereby killing it. And we celebrate that act and call it "choice". We as a culture will be considered evil by future generations.

Ritual infant circumcision would definitely be one of them. Trying to tell consenting adults that they can't marry each other will be another one.
