Yep, vinyl is not a bad idea, but looks cheap and nasty.
Why don't you tile it?

Vinyl is great as long as you make sure you have a good level surface underneath, best board it with some large sheets of boarding first and make sure that your edges are well sealed especially around the toilet, as any liquid that gets under the edges will soak into your boarding and never dry out, when my bathroom was done I waited until the sealant that the fitters had put down had dried (as it shrinks a bit ) and then put and extra lot over the top myself, my kids leave the floor swimming !!! and it has been great having the vinyl down, I just put a towel down when they get in the bath just to prevent any aquaplaining when I go to get them out !!!!LOL!!! Mmm someone suggested tile, its not good if it gets continually wet and it can be slippery and expensive and COLD! COLD! vinyl is warmer and you can get non slip, and if your kids fall it provides a softeer landing

No that would be the best and more cost effective solution at this moment. You need to make sure the bathroom floor is sealed over with a layer of hard board (this prevents the floorboards showing through the vinyl), then make sure the hardboard is sealed at the joints and all around the edges with any varnish you may have.
Your kids can splash away now and just leave you with a mop up job!

Personally, I would go with tile. There's nothing wrong with vinyl. There may be a small chance that water could still get underneath the vinyl and eventually it will start peeling up at the edges...no matter how well you lay it. It's less expensive so if it gets ruined you're not out a whole lot of money. But DEFINITELY get rid of the carpet!

As you have children (so do I) I would opt for the vinyl floor. If you or your children were to slip and bang their heads the softer cushioned vinyl would be much more forgiving.
True the ceramic floor is more trendy and longer lasting, but it is also more expensive and would need an experienced DIY'er to lay it.
Whereas the vinyl floor could be laid by most beginners.
visit www.fobo-flooring.co.uk for inspiration
Most vinyl floors have an anti slip finish unlike the glazed floor.
Also consider the risk of the ceramic floor cracking if fixing onto timber floorboards. You may need to lay Ply first.
Dave P mentions the Cushionflor this is a product from Forbo see above.

Vinyl is definitely and option. . . although it really adds no lasting value to your home. If your looking to add value as well i would suggest ceramic/natural stone tile flooring. Its really not that hard to do, and if you choose a basic tile (nothing super fancy) and depending apon the size of your bathroom, it won't be too much more expensive. But it does seem to last longer, and for resale tile floors in bathrooms are the better way to go.

you can get vinyl or even tile your bathroom floor but with vinyl or tiles make sure you have a mat or two down as the floor can be slippy getting out of the bath or shower

I like tiles but then you have to consider children falling. A good vinyl should do the trick.

OK you got your typo remark in before me.... Carpet gets wet and soggy Ugh!. Changed mine to wood laminate, but the special water resistant type(Aqualoc) Have a fluffy rug on the laminate to feel warmer to bare feet and to prevent slipping... Can easily be hung up or put on the airer to dry and is washable... Floor is so easy to just wipe over and always looks nice... Did the same in my separate toilet also, ..

Tile is preferential to vinyl and will add more value to your home. All new home builds offer tile as standard. It is not slippery as some would suggest. Marble is slippery but tile is not and you can choose colors, sizes, grouting and texture.
