Definitely, unless they are suffering from dementia. It sticks with you for life.
I can still remember mine and I'm 40 and haven't used it for 12 years

Totally lying!!! I was in the army for 9 years and been out for 2 and a half I am pretty sure i will never forget that number it will be printed on my brain for the rest of my life, you ask any old age pensioner that served in the war, I bet they still remember theirs.
He's a liar don't trust him, whats does he say he does now?? airline pilot lol x
if he is 36 I am guessing his number will have started with 24 or 25 he must be able to remember the first 2 digits surely!!

I'd be suspicious but then I'm a suspicious person full stop, lol. Seriously though my Dad left the army 16 years ago & he still remembers his number, even my Mum remembers it.

Yep, pretty much. I can remember the first number I had when I dropped out of basic training when I was sixteen, and the one when I re-enlisted at 24.
Still don't know why they gave me a new one. The old one was D221879L
Pellew 26's 1989.

Depends on the person as some people don't have good memory's. If it was my Husband that had been in the army then I doubt he would remember as he has a terrible memory and always has done but I would think that he would remember the first two numbers??

Well considering the US military has not had service numbers for over 30 years.
Not since 1974.
Your gonna have a hard time finding anyone who remembers it.
After 1974, they used Social security numbers.
So a 36 year old male, would have never been issued a service number to begin with.
Since he would have entered the military no earlier than 1989.

My friend's Grandfather remembers his from WWII. Sometimes, he mixes up the names of his sons. I wouldn't immediately call the guy a liar....maybe you were just asking sensitive questions and he didn't want to talk to you anymore. There was a 23 year old guy in my Macro course who was in Iraq w/ the Marines last year and would snap when people asked him about certain things. "I don't remember" could be the polite version I don't wanna say.

I served in the South African Defense Force in 1987 and 1988. I am 38 years old, and without thinking I can still recite my name rank and force number. My force number was: 85379501BG.
It may be that the person in question hit a blank spot, but your force number is something one doesn't forget easily.

When I was in the Army (British) you had to tell the Pay Officer your number before he paid you, It's something that you remember for life. If he can't remeber it he hasn't served.

I had mine 63 years ago and remember it as clear as a bell, whilst I appreciate that we are not all the same, if you have been in the army I doubt that anybody could forget it.
