People were quick to blame "global warming" for the disaster that is happening in Southern California. These fires are so extreme, so frightening that they must be caused by global warming.

Now it's discovered that the cause of the fire was arson.

My question is, would the arsonist still have started these fires if global warming wasn't happening? Was the cause of the arson global warming?

Maybe the fear that the Earth is ending made this person set the California fires? If we only listened to Algore, this person never would have set the fires.

Is this right?

Here is truth about global warming:

Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is
becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.
As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

With us or against us and either this or that doesn't work in the real world. Have you thought that if it wasn't for global warming and the drought it caused maybe the arson wouldn't have burnt very much?

Mr Jello only two of the fires were set by arson that we know of. I think from what i was watching on TV or read on the internet that the biggest one was caused by natural causes. But maybe you are right, the two arsonists bought into the fear and started these fires while one of them was shot by police because he tried to ram them with his Truck. Oh and lets not forget that its the environmentalists fault because they wont let people go in and clear the thick brush out or do whatever needs to be done because the fear for them is that we might kill some sort of rare fly or something.

It's a mistake to blame global warming for any short event in any one location. That's just weather.

What is true is that global warming will cause more droughts to occur in California and thus make even wildfires (or arson) more of a problem in the long run.

So damage from increased fires is a major problem resulting from global warming, even though blaming any one fire on global warming is wrong.

Your speculation on the motivation of the arsonist is not very likely. Criminals are not likely to be spending time thinking about global warming.

Southern Cali scrub brush hills are all but designed by nature to burn periodically. If not an arsonist, natural occurence would kick it off eventually. All this was happening well before climaxologist's came up with anthromonkey GW. California shot themselves in the foot by not allowing firebrakes to be maintained or residents to clear over growth near their homes and bussiness because it was not ECO friendly. Another example of dumba## politicians out to help you.

No I wouldnt be surprised if an arsonist just got done watching "incontinent truth" for the ten time and decided to do something for Global warming.

An apples-and-oranges question.

Out of the 16 separate blazes tearing across Southern California only two have been linked to arson.

The situation his the result of three significant factors converging on the region at one time: several years of severe drought, unusually high Santa Ana winds over a number of days, and very, very low humidity levels. In a sense, Southern California had become a tinderbox along for a "perfect" firestorm to occur.

Looking over the weather in the area for the past few years, I think this might be one of the first indicators that climate change is taking hold.

No, sometimes people (who should be taken out and horse whipped before they go to jail forever) are just plain old stupid arsonists who get off on setting fires. You can't look so far into it, because i'd imagine you're wrong there.

Come on Jello, you're not this dense.

Nobody is saying global warming caused the fires. Global warming simply helped create conditions which allowed the fires to thrive more than they would have otherwise.

Researchers warned us about the possibility a year ago.

Fire crews, land managers, ecologists and others need a better understanding of how global warming is making wildfires more frequent, bigger and more destructive, thousands of researchers meeting in San Diego agreed yesterday.

Their statement, issued at the Third International Fire Ecology and Management Congress in San Diego, was part of a grim declaration that called for new approaches to living with wildfires as constant companions.

“We're going to see more fire, not less,” said Robin Wills, president of the meeting's sponsor, the Association for Fire Ecology. “These increases . . . are going to be part of our new reality.”

Just to clarify, there were a number of fires, with differing causes. The Malibu fire was caused by a downed power line. The causes of all the fires has yet to be determined. The Orange County fire has been determined to be arson.

Fires are still going, people have lost their homes, awesome habitat has been destroyed, and you're using this to promote your platform. Shame on you.

That is wrong.

Everything about Global warming is very bad. It is the biggest problem facing the world today or any other day. Some people say it is not bad, but they are evil and twisted. Criminals light fires because they are evil. Fires are bad because they are caused by global warming. Criminals do not light fires because they are thinking about global warming. Criminals are global warming.

Download the movie "An Inconvenient truth" and it will explain it to you.
