The only way out in my view is pre-emptive. As a girl I think that provided you initiate the exchange you could, in most situations, get away with a wave.
I would definately not refuse someones hand if offered. You will have a very good chance of causing offence.
I think this is culture-specific as well. Male / female handshakes are not the universal norm in Australia for example but if someone refused to shake when offered you'd better have your fighting trousers on !

Well about 90% of the people I know dont wash there hands so what I try to do is just say hello and give them a wave and if they still extend there hand towards you just tell them the truth sorry I cant shake youre hand at this time I have the FLU!!!

You and try having something in your hands and make them appear to be full. Otherwise, just say 'I'm sorry but I just finished eating' or 'I have a cold'. Sometimes, it's best to swallow your pride and just shake hands. Heck even Donald Trump shakes hands now! When you have a chance, buy and use some hand sanitizer.

Refusing to shake hands with someone is rude and as good as saying you don't like the person! Unless of course you have a genuine reason why you can't! If there is such a reason then politely apologize to the person and tell him or her the actual reason why you have to decline his/her hand!!!

Shaking hands with someone you've just met is a sign of respect. Suck it up and shake.

I just say "nice to meet you" and smile, but don't move my hands, i kind of try to make it obvious through body language that i have no intention of shaking their hand.

If its a simply irresistible guy,use French etiquette and kiss him lightly on each cheek.But what a dilemma if an undesirable guy or women.Use your capacity of imagination...effective strategy is, at the precise moment of the handshake,take out your handkerchief and blow your nose vigorously, nobody would even want to slightly touch your hand...

Why don't you want to shake some ones hand?
Maybe try to have your hands full, or sit on them, or put your hand out to shake theirs but before they get to you pull it away and put your thumb to your nose and stick your tongue out and say na na na na nahhhhh!

THe least ya can do is shake their hand ..But let them make the gesture. Usually they will say Nice to meet you ... I usually say likewise... hard to go off that ... Keep it short and sweet and Im sure there will be little to talk about

you must have a reason why you dont want to shake hands with the person. if you dont like them, avoid meeting them...
but, if for any reason you meet and he offers his hand, then simply say, "sorry, but my mother tells me not to handshake with strangers.."
