Your friend is correct in the door the window travels up a track . The cable or gears inside the motor could be stripped or broken Although rare I have seen just jammed window tracks

Nissan calles the part window regulator. If you hear the motor running you may just need the window regulator. It takes a Nissan Technician about an Hour to replace that part. While your there at the dealership look at some of the New Century cars like a 2008 Maxima.
