My friend, 17, a Brooklyn resident, has two, impacted wisdom teeth on the bottom, but has no dental insurance. While NYU and Columbia are significantly cheaper than a private oral surgeon (yes, it is considered oral surgery), it is still unaffordable for him. Any suggestions or ideas?

Even if you have dental insurance it does not cover much. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out last year. Two of them were impacted. It cost me around $900. But most dentists these days now have financing options. When I went in I applied for a Care Card. It is a credit card type account that you can use only for medical purposes.

If the teeth are impacted many times medical insurance will cover it, they're considered tumors. Your friend may have to pay up front then get reimbursed from insurance. Ask the office he will be going to, usually they will know or can work out a payment plan.
You do not want to scrimp on a service like this, many people (DDS, Surgeon, Peri) can pull a tooth, not all of them should be.

Have you tried looking at dental schools? I live in Dallas and I know a lot of people that go to Baylor hospital (which is a where students practice their residency) and get teeth pulled for like 60 dollars without insurance. It is a student who does the work, but they are supervised.

I know there are some places that will actually pay you to get your wisdom teeth out, (friend got $500) because they need people willing to try new techniques or something (not entirely sure) I know there is one a place in Utah if they have something like that in New York I don't know but it's definitely worth looking into.

This is not uncommon, many people do not carry dental coverage, even some with healthcare. Dental offices know this, and many times will offer financing. Ask the dentist's office about payment plans.

Check and see if there's a dental clinic in your area. A lot of times, those places will let patients pay for services based on income.
