Umm, as an atheist your question is meaningless.
Assuming you're a muslim, it's as if I asked you
"If nobody other than Thor can lift Thor's hammer, but somebody else had to make it, how can any religion other than the Norse one answer that?"

Your question to atheists sounds illogical, It seems to be asking whether or not God can do the logically impossible, which is a totally meaningless question.
God cannot do what is not actually possible to be done, like creating a two-sided triangle, a squared circle or a married bachelor. It’s like asking, “If God beat Himself up, who would win?” or, “Can God’s power defeat His own power?”
Just because words can be strung together this way does not make the impossible possible - these things are contradictions, they are truly impossible in reality.
The Bible never claims that God can do all things. In fact, the Bible makes a point that there are things that God cannot do.
The Bible says for example that God cannot commit sin, God cannot tolerate sin and God cannot lie. Therefore omnipotence does not mean that God can do all things because God cannot and will not do anything that is contrary to His holy character.
Does Islam have a better answer than this?

Dear Karoly,
Since you throw this question to other religion and the atheist beside Islam , i apologies first for answering your question cause i'm a Muslim.
If one would really try to understand your question, they would really understand the meaning of the question.
First you ask
" Now if I ask the atheist question "if it is possible for God to take human form and create a river so long that he cannot swim across it"
Now this question is telling us (all religion including Atheist) to answer HOW would an Atheist answer, if this question is thrown at them.
Now an Atheist MUST reply: "this question is irrelevant to them cause they don't believe in GOD in the first place. They cannot say "YES" or "No" answer to this question if they are Atheist.
Now if this same question is ask to a Christian.
The Christian MUST reply "NO" due to the atheist does not believe in GOD in first place.
WHY the Christian MUST reply "NO" to this question?
The Christian cannot reply "this question is irrelevant to them (Atheist) cause they don't believe in GOD in the first place"
Reasons: The Christian Believe in GOD existence, in which they(Christian) must apply this "BELIEVE" to ALL Mankind not just their own, even they(Mankind) are Atheist.
NOW, take note the 2 answer. BOTH are NOT the SAME Meaning.
For the Atheist their reply is relevant to them, so there is nothing wrong with their answer above.
BUT for the Christian, their reply for this question which is Definite "NO" ,means they(Christian) AGGREE that "it is possible for God to take human form and create a river so long that he cannot swim across it"
Reason for this :
They(Christian) cannot say "Asking whether or not God can do the logically impossible is a totally meaningless question", Cause Christian attributes human form to God. (Jesus is the Son of God ).
But for us Muslim ,we can reply to the question above the same as what an Atheist answer which is "this question is irrelevant to them cause they don't believe in GOD in the first place."
AND if this question is directed to us MUSLIM we can answered with this answer "Asking whether or not God can do the logically impossible things or task is a totally meaningless question"
Because We never attributes human form to God.
see the point guys. :)

islam will always win over other religions which attribute human form to ALMIGHTY GOD because ISLAM NEVER COMPROMISES ON TRUTH ,remember that an athiest when he makes any such question like you have stated above he criticises all those religions attributing human form to GOD except islam,it is because ISLAM teaches the truth that do not lie by blasphemising and stating that the created man can become GOD and do not try to insult GOD by saying that he takes human form which is also a lie,can anyone explain the lies of the christian that all the GODLY ATTRIBUTES had come down in the form of jesus(peace be upon him),then tell me to whom did jesus christ(peace be upon him)used to pray/supplicate and what was the need for him to pray/supplicate to ALMIGHTY GOD in heaven?

The basic difference between Islam and Christianity is that Islam does not believe that Christ is God. They also argue that he did not resurrect from the dead but resuscitated without dying. All other religions do not believe in the divinity of Christ.

The length of the river is surely irrelevant. Since he's swimming across it, wouldn't the width be the important factor?
And no, it's not an appropriate question, because it presupposes the existence of God.
If that's the best challenge you've got, I think atheism's good to go.

This argument from assumption is just that. An assumption.
All religions do not imagine god/gods/goddesses as human forms.
As for your philosophical 'conundrum', it is nonsensical. Sorry.
