im in my early 20's and Im a college student and my friends leave their dogs with me all the time. Is this some sort of pet sitting service or do you know the people personally. I mean, if the person has a dog, and you see how there dog is treated, then you'll know how yours will be treated. If the person's never owned a dog before, then I might be a little worried as to whether they can handle it. When i go to work and my boyfriends home, Im always calling him from work to remind him to fill up their water, and make sure the gates closed and that everything is put up high enough so they can't get into it. Everyday....he's probably so annoyed haha! But whatever, a phone call is cheaper then a vet bill if anything goes wrong!

Absolutely! In fact, a 20 year old probably doesn't have much money to his name so taking a job would mean alot to him. Especially if it means that if he does a good job, he will get more jobs from you in the future. As well as your friends by word of mouth. The best way to feel him out is to meet him in person and see how he acts around pets. It is a huge plus if he has experience but a true compassion for animals goes a long way. If you are still worried, hide a webcam and record. That way, you will know for sure that your pet is well taken care of. It will give you peace of mind that you will know how well your loved ones were cared for. Good luck!

Yes. There are a lot of responsible 20-year-olds, so if they looked trustworhy, I probably would, but I wouldn't trust just anyone. I think the best thing to do would be to have someone as a reference who can at least vouch for the fact that you're not going to rob their house, or start with people you know, so you can build a reputation.

I would have no problem having you guys come out and watch my 4 pets. Esp if you do a home visit before I go out of town to see how you interact with my dogs. I would like to some kind of references about your reliability (either a former employer, teacher) and about your ability to work with animals (perhaps volunteer at a local shelter, assist with adoption groups by doing adoption events with them, or a training instructor you worked with for training a personal dog.)
I would also when I get home, like to see detailed reports about your visits. Did my dogs enjoy your visits, anything happen I need to know about (puppy peed on the floor when you got there because he got excited, you cleaned it the best you can, but I may need to go over the spot with a shampooer).
Invest in some simple equipment (a small handheld shampooer, pet first aid kit, grooming kit to brush out animals).
Remember, I expect more from a person I pay to care for my animals than I expect from myself. Just keep that in mind when you start your business.
Good luck

I'm probably biased, but I'm 20 and consider myself one of the most responsible people I know when it comes to pets. If you dont have any business references try using family and friends that can attest to your responsibility and love of animals. That's what I would do, I thought about doing this myself a few years ago. I would give it a shot. I would def. let you babysit my puppers. Which is saying a lot because I'm pretty crazy about my dogs. Right now I dont let anyone watch them and still havent found a place I'm willing to board them.

If i were told about your business, i hope it was a former customer of yours, in order for me to consider it.
I would trust a 14 year old that looked unprofessional if people i know vouch for his ability to do the job. Am not interested in how many boy scout badges he has.
start the business, is the only way to know
find a way to be willing to believe that you will be good at this and you will find people willing to trust you
good luck

Not a chance.
I don't have cats or dogs, but rather a parrot. I hardly trust family to watch over my little guy due to his complex needs, let alone friends. Strangers don't stand a chance, whether they're in rags or a business suit - looks mean nothing to me in this regard.
I'd only trust a licensed professional with a brick-and-mortar location.

Do you know this person well? Do they like animals and are they acquainted with them well enough to be able to care for them properly? You know, there are people that make their living pet sitting. Why don't you look one up in your area and see what you think. We always take our dogs to a kennel, but leave our cats in the care of a professional and bonded pet sitter and it works out very well.

I don't feel that how they look says anything about their level of maturity. If you know the person, you'll feel comfortable leaving your loved ones to be cared for by someone while you're away. If you don't know this person, I think you should continue your search for a better suited individual that you do know something about or break out and just pay to have them kenneled. Their lives are in YOUR hands so do the right thing for THEM!! They depend on YOU!!

okay I have to say I am amazed at some peoples answers, if your going on a trip and you need someone to watch your animal why would you get rid of it while your going on a trip! come on yes you got a dog saying you would take care of it no matter what, well it still has its home, water, food, vet and so on! when you got a dog its not like you signed your life over to not having fun anymore! I would so hire them, heck check them out see how your animals act around them ask them questions about dogs about themselves do it for a week or maybe couple of days and if you feel like they fit in with your pets go for it! I say have fun with the idea and hope you get alot of great offers!
