Every breed has a standard ... Here, go look:

http://www.akc.org

"Teacup" and "Tiny Toy" are nothing more than marketing-ploys and catchwords designed to get people to spend more and more money on pups that are genetically inferior and plagued with health problems.

Find a good breeder and buy a dog from someone who knows what he/she is doing. Or adopt from a shelter or rescue.

If you truly need a pup to fit in your pocket, Toys 'R Us has a nice selection.

"teacup" "tiny toy" "micro" "pocket" are ALL back yard breeder and puppy mill terms places on unhealthy underbred runt puppies. Sure, you can find a tiny dog, but it will have lots of health problems, and many of them do not live more than a few years.

None of these "teacup" breeders will offer a money-back guarantee on size either! They may tell you "oh it will be under X pds" .. they dont know that for sure.. they also do not put a health guarantee on the dog either. How heartbreaking it would be to pay thousands for a tiny dog, only to have it a few years!

Some of these breeders will also just simply use the "teacup" label to rip you off and get more money. They put a young tiny puppy in a teacup and take a cute pic. Some of these breeders have been known to use larger females, that are actually larger than standard, to avoid the cost of a cecarian.. they have smaller females that are used for "display" and let you believe that those are the parents.

Chihuahuas at the smallest breed. The standard is 6 pounds or less. 6 Pounds is plenty small. Your best bet is to seek out a reputable breeder who shows her dogs and also is doing all the genetic health testing and puts health guarantees on her dogs.

Check out AKC.org and it will answer your question. You'll find that there is no such thing as any breed of dog being called a "Teacup". Go to the "Toy Group" and read every breed standard. Then you'll know which dogs are the smallest. I believe the Chihuahua is the smallest toy dog you can get. When purchasing a pure bred dog don't you want it to fit the breed standard as close to it as possible when you're spending a high price for it? If you get a dog that doesn't fall within the weight range of the breed then it's NOT considered part of the "breed standard" and not considered pure bred. That's why they have weight standards to determine what size the dog should be.

The runt of the litter is the weakest pup of the litter and is usually the subject of the most genetic defects. It is the smallest and the least strong; as a result, it cannot compete as well among its littermates and therefore ends up getting less nourishment than it needs.

Backyard breeders or irresponsible breeders sell off the runt of the litter as "teacup" or "pocket" puppies.

One of the worst things is seeing someone pay extra money to get a "teacup dog" when they are actually paying for the weakest dog in the litter. Don't be fooled.

If you're looking for a small dog, the Chihuahua is probably the smallest breed.

Teacup is a fancy name for a mutt. They are generally unheathy and poorly bred. I would look on www.petfinder.com or at the shelter. I would suggest getting a dog around a year old because they are fully grown and you will know how big they are. I would research a lot and make sure to take obedience classes. You want to socialize the smaller dogs so that they are not affraid. I think a Chihuahua is the smallest breed. Just be careful because they are very fragile!

The smallest type of dog is a chihuahua. Teacups do not excist. Some breeders try to make there breed of choice smaller than the standard size which i personally do not believe is good for the dog. But there are some pups out there that are small yet very healthy.

there is no such thing as a teacup. that is a term people use to get a quick buck and the word teacup sounds very cool doesn't it? well its not. people will do anything for a quick buck now a days. there ARE teacups BUT they will have problems in the future, teacups are kinda like a runt with serious problems. i mean serious problems, like blood problems and problems growing bones etc etc

The smallest was a Chihauwau and it was something like only 4 oz. A small Maltese can be around 2-3 lbs... you just need to check with the breeders to see what size they put out on average.-

My choice would be the Maltese because of their beauty and the angel kisses... heehee

Good Luck

If you are looking for a purebred no, there are no teacup burebreds and unless you are looking to adopt don't get a mixed breed. it only encourages irresponsible breeding. Here is a list of toy breeds recognized by the AKC. Remember, a dog is not an accessory and still needs to be exercised, diciplined, and socialized in order to be happy.

No such thing as a "teacup" any DOG!
The smallest breed is a Chihuahua, not to be smaller than five pounds.

Anything smaller is unhealthy and irresponsibly bred.
